BUSINESS PROBLEMS

Any large-scale company and contracts that requires construction software for quality control, safety, and daily reports (a very big deal legally and mobile based). The SaaS application catered to any construction project that goes from Pre-construction to Construction Execution to Commissioning Handover. The specific industries catered here were Architecture, Civil, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), Plants and Structures. Some prominent clients using the service included Andy J. Egan, IKT Skanska, iNFRANEA, Clayco and Dimeo

The SaaS application was now getting into legacy stage with a lot of technical debt, older version of Ruby on Rails, older JavaScript frameworks, classic look etc. At the same time, the application needed to be linked to enterprise features which were based on Microservices. The iOS Mobile app was redesigned and had already surpased the Web Application. Hence the Web SaaS offering needed a major face-lift and overhaul.

SOLUTION

Main goal was to replace the legacy cruft laden web app with a brand new tech stack and UX. Along the way some enterprise features were also enabled. More user research was required to simplify features and also modernize features such as File management, profile management, daily update logs, lists and so on.

MY ROLE

I was the whole-sole UX/UI Architect on the project. I formalized the UI stack which involved Ruby on Rails and Angular, the componentization and design system strategy. I created multiple Ruby gems to aid the UI work. I also evangelized best Angular JS practices. I also visited the construction sites around Boston where the software was being used for building design and daily reports. I collected priceless data on what new features were needed and why.
